Redesign with Recycled Plastic♻️
At Tierra Hotels we have taken an innovative step to reduce our footprint, implementing signage made of recycled plastic at Tierra Atacama, Tierra Chiloé and Tierra Patagonia. A change that may seem small, but generates a positive ripple effect and was born from observing an everyday redesign process.
“Until now we had relied on recycled paper signs to guide guests in the hotels, and while they were practical, they generated a huge amount of waste in their development,” explains Andrea Viterbo, head of design at Tierra Hotels and leader of this initiative.
Starting this season, in all Tierra Hotels destinations, paper signs in rooms, bathrooms, spas and other common areas have been replaced with recycled plastic signage. These innovative signs are durable and reusable, which drastically reduces the need for constant replacements.
Ecoequivalencies
The use of recycled plastic for signage has multiple environmental benefits. First, it gives a second life to bottles and other plastics that would otherwise end up in landfills. In addition, by needing fewer replacements, it saves a large amount of resources such as paper, ink and water.
“We managed to convert 172 kilograms of plastic into 2000 signs. This means that, in addition to giving this material value, disposable products were replaced by a durable and permanent one, thus promoting the circular economy,” says Ignacio Narváez, co-founder and CEO of Upcycling, the company that developed the project.
